BEDDING BEGONIAS
Bedding begonias are a popular choice for gardeners who want to add a splash of colour to their outdoor spaces. These plants are known for their abundance of blooms that come in a wide range of colours, making them a versatile choice for any garden design.
Description:
• Low-growing plants that typically reach up to 30cm in height
• Leaves are glossy and green, often with a slightly toothed edge
• Flowers come in shades of pink, red and white
Cultivation:
• Best in partial shade, although some varieties can tolerate full sun
• When planting them in the sun, it’s essential to plant them close together. That way, the top leaves will form an ‘umbrella’ for the smaller leaves and will shade the ground between the plants. This helps to prevent the soil from heating up too much
• Begonias thrive in well-draining soil that is kept consistently moist
• Fertilise every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth and blooming
• Pinch back regularly to encourage bushiness and remove spent blooms to promote continuous blooming
• Frost sensitive – a mulch of compost and a covering of straw in colder winter climates can protect begonias sufficiently to allow them to grow back in spring when all danger of frost is gone
Garden uses:
• Ideal for garden beds, pathways and borders
• Perfect for containers and hanging baskets, where their colourful blooms can be appreciated up close
• A great choice mixed with perennials and bulbs
• Massed for maximum visual impact
