Loved and owned by Carol and Kevin Sacke. A memorial garden for Kelli, their precious daughter who died from an inoperable brain tumour. This garden is God-given. Being an artist, Carol saw the vision the minute she laid eyes on it way back in 2014. Nine years later and the garden rooms are plenty: a champagne garden, a proudly South African section, a golfer’s delight, a fancy-free, and a not-to-be-missed hot and spicy garden! Come and see the Art Gallery and have a chat with the artist Carol Sacke at Kelli Belli Gallori.

Step into history at the Heritage Garden, lovingly curated by the Midland’s Rose Society since 2017, where over 138 varieties of Old Garden Roses dating back to the early settlers bloom in a picturesque setting, preserving the rich botanical legacy of South Africa’s past. The garden is entered by a ramp, as well as having a pathway around the perimeter of the garden to make it wheelchair friendly. Four arches enter the grass section, and we have four beds in which we grow four different shades of roses. In the centre of the garden there is a gazebo with a table and chairs. All the roses are labelled and this year, there will be a map of the garden with information about the interesting stories of some of the roses.
Sale of roses / plants / seeds / calendars / cards will be available. The Midlands Rose Society will also be selling roses taken from cuttings in the garden, as well as plants which they use as underplantings. They also sell packets of seeds taken from the garden. Beautiful Rose Calendars and Cards published by Jackie Kalley will also be available. These sales, as well as the entry fee to see the garden, are used to maintain the garden.

The original homestead at Prosperity Farm was built in 1885. The early settlers got to work immediately planting exotic trees, including oaks, planes and acers. A megalithic plane from that time still dominates the north lawn. In the 1920’s, Gwelo Goodman, visited Prosperity and set to the task of re-designing and laying out a new garden. He surrounded the north lawn with an Italianesque wall and set opposing thatched pavilions either side. The symmetry was completed with the planting of cypress trees and a grove of planes. Today the walled garden is fringed by a herbaceous border which is a blaze of colour in the spring. Goodman designed a grand entrance to the garden through imposing wrought iron gates and down a long hedged avenue to a parking area amidst an orchard. From there one proceeded on foot through a sandstone pergola festooned with wisteria and Banksia roses. The Erskine Family acquired Prosperity at the turn of the century and changed the entrance to the house and garden to fit with modern farming needs. A new entrance through formal rose gardens with a carpet of Snow in Summer, a new green house, and asparagus beds round off a gem of a Kamberg garden.

Unfortunately, they do get frost, but from early spring the garden starts showing off with a flush of blooming clivias, rhododendrons, and azaleas. Key features include big open spaces (lawns), a forest garden (clivias) and a spectacular vista over the Karkloof and Loskop.
