PETUNIAS
Petunias are one of the most popular annual bedding plants due to their ease of cultivation and abundance of beautiful blooms. They are loved for their showy trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in a wide range of colours and put on a show from late spring to the first frosts.
Description:
• Bushy, low-growing plants reaching up to approximately 30cm in height
• Thick green leaves with a slightly hairy texture
• Large, trumpet-shaped blooms 80mm to 100mm in diameter
• Blooms come in a range of colours including pink, purple, yellow, red, white and striped
• Annuals, typically grown from seed or seedlings
Cultivation:
• Best in full sun, although they can tolerate some light shade
• Grow in rich, well-drained soil
• Fertilise every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth and blooming
• Pinch back regularly to encourage bushiness and remove spent blooms to promote continuous blooming
• Because petunias prefer full sunlight, if planted in containers, they may dry out more quickly during hot weather periods and may require regular watering
• Frost sensitive
Garden uses:
• Excellent in garden beds and borders
• Ideal for mass plantings for a bold, colourful impact
• Perfect for hanging baskets and containers
• Companion plants – lobelia, alyssum, marigold
