This summer, we’re inviting kids of all ages to take part in the Blackwood’s Sunflower Superstar competition and show off their green thumbs! Don’t worry if you’ve not grown a Sunflower before. With a little help from our team or friends and family, you’ll have your sunflower sprouting in no time. They’re super easy to grow and we’re here to guide you every step of the way!
Grab your FREE sunflower seeds from Monday 11th November, plant them and snap some pics of their growing journey – you could be crowned our Sunflower Superstar and WIN a R1000 Blackwood’s Voucher, a hamper from Kirchhoffs & Raw – and a R2000 Blackwood’s voucher for your school! Plus – there’s fun hampers for all our competition categories too! Here’s how to enter and what you need to know:
How to Enter
- Visit your nearest Blackwood’s Garden Centre and sign up for your packet of FREE sunflower seeds and growing instructions.
- Get Planting! Take your seeds home and start planting. Whether it’s in the garden or a pot, it’s all about having fun and watching your sunflower grow tall and strong! 🌱
- Care for Your Sunflower. Make sure to water your sunflower regularly and give it plenty of sunshine—check out our Sunflower Care Guide for all the tips you need to help it thrive! 🌞
- Snap & Share. Show us your sunflower journey! Take pictures of your sunflower growing and post them on social media. Make sure to tag @blackwoodsnursery and @rawlivingsa and @kirchhoffsseeds.
- Be a Star! Submit your final picture of your sunflower masterpiece by 15 February 2025 (final submission date) and you could be our 2025 Sunflower Superstar! 🌻

Competition Categories
The Sunflower Superstar grand prize will be given for the biggest sunflower smiles. They will receive a R1000 Blackwood’s Voucher, a Kirchhoff & Raw Hamper and a R2000 Blackwood’s Voucher for their school!
But we’re also giving away awesome prizes and hampers for more than just the biggest sunflower smiles! Fans on our social media platforms will get the chance to vote for the winners of some other fun categories! Here are all the categories you can enter:

Grand Prize for the brightest sunflower smile in town!
Best Sunflower in a Pot
🌻 For those growing their sunflower in a pot – size doesn’t matter! Not all sunflowers need to be in the ground – and not everyone has a garden. But they can still have the joy of sunflowers.
Sunflower Squad
🌻 Best group effort – get a picture of you, your friends or families, (even your pets) having fun and planting together.
Funniest Sunflower
🌻 A prize for the sunflower with the quirkiest look or character. Some sunflowers have a personality! Whether it’s a funny shape, a tilt or quirky growth pattern, this category celebrates sunflowers with the most character.

Terms & Conditions
- Eligibility:
The competition is open to children of all ages. Blackwood’s will provide one packet of FREE sunflower seeds per child (while stocks last). Blackwood’s employees and their immediate families are not eligible to win. - Entry Process:
To enter, participants must visit any Blackwood’s store, sign up at the cashier and collect their free sunflower seeds and growing instructions. - Photo Submission Requirements:
- Participants must post pictures of their sunflower on social media (either Instagram or Facebook) and tag Blackwoods, Kirchhoffs and Raw:
Instagram – @blackwoodnursery | @kirchhoffsseeds | @rawlivingsa
Facebook – @Blackwoods.HoG | @KirchhoffsZA | @RawLivingSA - Photos must clearly show the sunflower.
- Final submission date for all tagged photos is 15 February 2025.
- Participants must post pictures of their sunflower on social media (either Instagram or Facebook) and tag Blackwoods, Kirchhoffs and Raw:
- Prizes:
Prizes will be awarded based on the categories listed. The Sunflower Superstar (biggest Sunflower smile) will receive a R1000 Blackwood’s voucher, a Kirchhoff’s Hamper and a R2000 Blackwood’s Voucher for their school, with additional smaller hampers and prizes awarded for other fun categories as listed above. - Permissions:
By submitting photos, participants (and their parents/guardians) give Blackwood’s, Kirchhoffs and Raw permission to use the images for marketing purposes, including but not limited to social media, newsletters and website. This includes sharing winning entries and general submissions. - Parental Consent:
Parents or guardians must provide consent for their child’s participation and agree that any photos or media shared may be used by Blackwood’s, Kirchhoffs and Raw in line with these terms. - Indemnity:
Participants and their guardians release Blackwood’s, Kirchhoffs and Raw from any claims or liabilities arising from their participation in this competition, including any damage, loss, or injury sustained during the planting and growing of sunflowers. - Data Protection (POPI Act Compliance):
Any personal information collected during the competition will be processed in accordance with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act. Your data will be used solely for the purpose of communicating with you regarding this competition and future marketing efforts by Blackwood’s, Kirchhoffs and Raw. You may unsubscribe from these communications at any time. Your details will not be shared beyond Blackwood’s, Kirchhoffs and Raw to any third parties without your consent. - Competition Deadlines:
- Seed collection begins 11 November 2024.
- All entries must be posted on social media by 15 February 2025.
- Winners will be announced via Blackwood’s social platforms and contacted directly.
- Judging:
Winners will be selected based on the category criteria by a Blackwood’s panel of judges. The decision of the judges will be final. The judges will select 6 entries within each category and put these entries forward on social media, where the public will be invited to vote for their favourite and the ultimate winner of each category. - Disclaimer: Not Affiliated with Social Media Platforms
