Weekends where garden gates in the Midlands open wide, inviting everyone to explore the beauty and creativity tucked away in our neighbourhoods. That’s the magic of Open Midlands Gardens—a community tradition that’s been blooming for over 60 years!

Starting in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, this inspiring initiative has spread across South Africa, connecting garden lovers far and wide. Homeowners volunteer to showcase their gardens, welcoming visitors to wander through their private green spaces. Entry tickets (affordable or even free) support local charities chosen by the homeowners, making it a celebration of nature and community.

Why Open Your Garden?

The thought of opening your garden to strangers might feel a little intimidating—after all, what if people judge your gardening skills or choices? But here’s the truth: Open Gardens is about so much more than perfection. It’s about sharing through showing—celebrating the joy of gardening, inspiring others and learning from each other.

Every garden, no matter the size or style, has a story to tell. By opening yours, you join a community of passionate gardeners who value trust, connection and the sheer love of nurturing something beautiful.  Blackwood’s Open Midlands Gardens is your invitation to explore, learn and celebrate the beauty of gardening.  Let’s grow together!
