IXIA

Ixia is a corm (bulbo-tuber).  They can be planted en-masse in the garden to add a bright splash of colour.  There are about 50 different species of Ixia and they are indigenous to South Africa.  Their pretty flowers will open fully during the day.  When evening comes, they will close a little.  Ixia prefers well-draining soil.   Before planting the corms, loosen the soil to about 30cm deep and work in sand to increase drainage.  It’s a good idea to mulch after planting and water the plants regularly and deeply during winter and spring. Ixia should be planted at a depth of 2cm.  Plant in full sun or semi-shade.
