Sweet Success with Strawberries

Few things capture the joy of gardening quite like picking a sun-warmed strawberry straight from the plant. Strawberries are one of the easiest and most rewarding crops for home gardens, patios and even balconies.
Planting
Where: Choose a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.
Soil: Strawberries like well-drained, compost-enriched soil. Raised beds, containers, or hanging baskets are perfect.
Spacing: Allow about 20cm to 30 cm between plants to let them spread and fill out.
Care
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Strawberries don’t like “wet feet.”
Feeding: Use a balanced fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during the growing season for strong plants and plenty of fruit.
Mulching: A layer of straw or mulch helps keep berries clean, suppress weeds and conserve moisture.
Protecting Your Harvest
Birds: Netting or fine mesh over plants is the most effective way to keep birds from pinching your crop.
Monkeys: In areas where monkeys are cheeky visitors, sturdy netting or growing strawberries in hanging baskets near the house can help keep fruit safer. Some gardeners also grow them in enclosed veggie cages for added protection.

Extra Tips
-
Pick fruit regularly as it ripens to encourage more berries.
-
Remove old leaves and runners if you want plants to focus energy on fruit.
-
Replace plants every 3–4 years for the best yields.
With just a little care, strawberries will reward you with a harvest that’s as sweet to grow as it is to eat. They’re a spring essential for every edible garden.
