Venus Fly Traps
What is a Venus Fly Trap?
The Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea muscipula) is one of the most fascinating carnivorous plants in the world. It lures insects with its sweet nectar, then snaps shut in less than a second – making it both a gardener’s curiosity and a child’s delight!

Fun Facts
-
Each trap can snap shut in less than a second.
-
They count touches! It takes two taps on their trigger hairs within 20 seconds to close.
-
They don’t have stomachs – instead, they release digestive enzymes to break down their prey.
-
Don’t worry – they’re only dangerous to bugs!
-
A healthy Venus Fly Trap can live for 20 years or more.
Growing & Caring for Your Hungary Plant
Light
– Loves full sun – at least 4–6 hours of direct light each day.
– Indoors? Place on a sunny windowsill or under a strong grow light.
Water
– Try to use rainwater or filtered water if possible.
– Keep soil moist at all times (never dry), but not waterlogged. Standing water in a tray is ideal. Keep the water tray full in summer and fill it weekly in winter.
Soil
– Needs nutrient-poor soil. The best mix is peat moss and perlite (never potting soil or compost – too rich!).
Feeding
– They catch their own insects if outdoors. Indoors, you can feed the traps small live bugs (flies, ants, spiders).
– No fertiliser – it burns their roots.
– Don’t “play” with the traps too often – closing uses up lots of energy.
Winter Rest
– Venus Fly Traps need a winter dormancy. In cold months, they slow down, and some leaves die back. This is normal! Reduce watering slightly and keep them cool until spring.
